Biotechnology in Boston is Booming

We are used to massive healthcare shows like HIMSS and intimate conferences like the Healthcare IT Marketing and PR Conference (HITMC), but the BIO International Convention was an entirely different experience. The number of biotechnology companies and countries interested in luring biotechs to their shores was bursting, as Boston is becoming an even bigger hub for this industry.

The conference was filled with scientists, researchers, and companies ranging from industrial/environmental to molecular/cellular diagnostics. It was a melting pot — there were attendees and exhibitors from all over the world including Puerto Rico, Hawaii, South Africa, China, Australia, and Europe.

We found it to be a much easier conference to navigate than HIMSS (it’s about one-third the size) and the show floor was actually quiet enough to have meaningful conversations.

We had a great time exhibiting in the Connecticut Pavilion, organized by BioCT. While there, we had the privilege of meeting people from other fantastic CT companies like Jackson Laboratory, Connecticut Innovations, sema4, BioPharmaGlobal and Vistara Bioscience.

Thanks to the CT organizations making the Pavilion a reality: the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD); Connecticut Innovations (CI), a leading source of financing for Connecticut’s growing companies; and BioCT, the state bioscience association.

Mollusks in Biotech

If you read our June newsletter, then you’re familiar with the mollusk situation. For those of you that didn’t see it, some people at BIO were wearing shirts that said, “Ask Me About My Mollusk” and were literally carrying mollusks around! (Don’t miss out on another newsletter! You can sign up for our newsletter here).

Well, when I went to find these people to ask them about their mollusks, they were nowhere to be found. I think it had something to do with studying mollusk cells as potential cancer treatments.  The world may never know why folks were walking around with mollusks at BIO 2018, but maybe I’ll find out at BIO 2019!
