The Foundation
The FoundationThe Sarah Parvin Foundation just hosted their 11th annual Sarah Parvin Memorial SoccerFest. The foundation was created shortly after the passing of Sarah Parvin. Ovarian cancer took her life at the age of 12. Her family decided to keep her legacy going by raising money for ovarian cancer research.
They do this through the SoccerFest as well as Par4Parvin. The SoccerFest is a 24-hour soccer tournament since Sarah loved and played soccer. Par4Parvin is a one-day golf fundraiser event.
The Tournament
Teams come from all over the country. This event triples the population of Quakertown, Pennsylvania, and is the largest event in Bucks County. There are brackets for kids, teens, and adults as well as men’s, women’s, and coed brackets. Festivities start on Friday night with a cornhole tournament, live music, and food. Below, you can see our food stands as well as the first place winners of the cornhole tournament with myself (on the far right) and Sandra Parvin (second from the left), Sarah’s mom.
Saturday morning is the kickoff opening ceremony, and soccer games happen for the following 24 hours. Saturday afternoon is the balloon release, which you can see folks preparing for in a photo below. Sunday morning we wrap up with breakfast and a closing ceremony, thanking everyone for participating and being part of this great mission.
My Role
I have had the pleasure of volunteering for the last five years at the SoccerFest. My boyfriend, Gary, and his family are very close to the Parvins. Gary refers to Sarah as his cousin. This year I was a volunteer coordinator, along with Gary’s Aunt Joyce, pictured below. My role was to make sure all stations – food, tickets, raffle baskets, dunk tank – had the appropriate amount of volunteers. Additionally, I helped wherever there was a need such as refilling the condiment table, running to the store for milk, selling burgers, etc. Without volunteers, this event couldn’t succeed! It’s incredible to be part of a cause so much bigger than myself.
We don’t have a final count for this year yet, but in the previous 10 years, the foundation has collectively raised over $350,000, which has gone directly into cancer research at Jefferson University Hospital. Ovarian cancer research is needed to find a cure. If you’re interested in donating, you can do so here.
